The scope operators did, in fact, sit while monitoring the PPI and height finder scopes. I feel compelled to respond to the insulting and ignorant letter by Geoff Baldwin (Letters, June 6), stating that all we did at Mount Umunhum was sit on our duffs. This is the practice in most of Western Europe, even in Italy, where church marriage is nearly universal. The states have deputized clergy (as well as secular judges, etc.) to perform an act that only the state has any legal interest in - as McHone also wisely wrote, “If the happy couple want to sanctify their union by some kind of ceremony, then they can do so with a priest, clergyman, rabbi, etc.” A simpler solution is to notarize and register a completed marriage license, along with required blood testing, thereby making the marriage legal for secular purposes. If you’re married, you and your spouse can file joint federal income taxes, you can inherit absent a will, and over a thousand other things. Stop issuing marriage licenses and instead give out civil union or domestic partnership licenses.” The problem is that the states and the federal government put unique value on “marriage” for legal purposes. Gene McHone wrote (Letters, June 6), “I think the states, at least my state, California, should get out of the marriage business.
